The Edge is an alternative education program designed to equip struggling teens with the tools necessary to become more productive members of society, at home, school and in the community. The program was designed to meet the needs of kids on “The Edge” of societal norms. The Edge provides accredited private special education since learning difficulties is often the centerpiece to the development of behavior problems. In addition to a full academic curriculum including recreational activities and sports, individual and family psychotherapy are provided on an as needed basis. Weekly group therapy is mandatory for Edge students. Staff conducts daily devotionals and community meetings. Psychiatric care and oversight is provided on a case-by-case basis

The Edge is designed for students aged 12 – 15 years old, experiencing behavioral difficulties for multiple reasons. (Older students may be considered on a case-by-case basis). Some of these difficulties are the result of learning disabilities such as dyslexia or an attention deficit disorder. Other difficulties may be the result of psychological diagnoses such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), Autistic Spectrum Disorder including Asperser’s Syndrome and more.

At “The Edge” staff are trained to look for “teachable moments”. This means that counseling takes place everywhere all of the time and is not reserved strictly for the licensed professional providing individual psychotherapeutic sessions for students. Having arrived at this program from a psycho-educational framework, this program has a unique perspective for the remediation of behavioral difficulties not shared by other programs developed from a psychotherapeutic perspective. Our perspective begins by focusing on successful learning experience weekdays in the classroom. While a fully individualized State of Georgia derived curriculum is administered with each pupil, a clinical and therapeutic approach is developed based upon our experience with each student in the classroom. This is then used as a springboard to create a framework in which to discern both consequences and rewards for behaviors not meeting societally accepted standards. This in turn serves to create a behavior modification system developed specifically for that individual student. This paradigm develops into a well disciplined, organized and structured family type unit. From this unit the young person is expected to learn the type of interdependent living skills necessary for a successful and harmonious existence in today’s world.
